Open bar, champagne toasts, a long night, a room full of strangers. You can be there and stay sober.
A whole-day event
Weddings are uniquely tough on a sober person. They run all day, the alcohol is free and everywhere, there's a toast you're expected to raise a glass to, and you may not know many people in the room. That's a long stretch to stay steady through. The good news: with a little planning you can be fully present for someone's big day and never touch a drink. What helps:
Sparkling water or a mocktail in a proper glass means you blend right in — and for the toast, you raise it like everyone else. No one needs to know, and most won't notice.
It's a marathon. Eat properly, drink water, and don't try to white-knuckle hour after hour. Step out for air whenever the room gets to be too much.
Spot one ally early — someone who knows you're sober or just makes you comfortable — so the long stretches have a friendly face built in.
There's often a late-evening moment where it gets harder. Decide in advance who you'll text or step outside to call, and keep your own ride so you can leave on your terms.
