Who we are and what Steady is
Steady is a sobriety companion app operated by Steady. By downloading or using the Steady app, or by visiting steadycompanion.app, you agree to these Terms of Service.
Steady provides a 24/7 AI companion called Ray, sobriety tracking tools, access to the 12 Steps, milestone celebrations, a meeting finder, an SOS contact screen, and a mood tracker. Ray is powered by AI and is designed to offer peer-style support and encouragement.
What Steady is not
This is the most important section. Please read it.
- Steady is not a medical device and is not regulated as one.
- Steady is not a licensed counselling or therapy service. Ray is an AI, not a therapist, counsellor, or healthcare professional.
- Steady is not a replacement for your sponsor, AA meetings, or human connection in recovery.
- Steady is not a crisis service. In a crisis, contact your sponsor, call the AA helpline, or dial emergency services.
- Steady is not a substitute for professional medical or psychological treatment. If you need professional help, please seek it.
Ray is here to support you between meetings, not to replace them. He's a companion for the in-between moments — not a professional, not a sponsor, not a doctor.
Eligibility
- You must be 18 years of age or older to use Steady.
- You must have the legal capacity to agree to these terms in your country or region.
- By using Steady, you confirm that you meet these requirements.
If you are under 18, please do not use Steady. If we become aware that a user is under 18, we will close their account.
Your account
- You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure.
- You are responsible for all activity that takes place under your account.
- If you suspect unauthorised access to your account, contact us immediately at hello@steadycompanion.app.
- You may only have one account. Creating duplicate accounts is not permitted.
- You must provide accurate information when creating your account.
Acceptable use
You agree to use Steady only for its intended purpose — supporting your recovery journey.
You agree not to:
- Use Steady for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable laws.
- Attempt to reverse engineer, hack, or disrupt the app or its underlying services.
- Use Steady to harass, abuse, or harm others.
- Attempt to access other users' accounts or data.
- Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to interact with Steady.
- Misrepresent yourself or provide false information in your profile.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.
AI-generated content
Ray's responses are generated by AI. While we work hard to make Ray helpful and appropriate, AI can make mistakes. Ray's responses:
- Are not professional medical, psychological, or legal advice.
- May not always be accurate or appropriate for your specific situation.
- Should not be used as the sole basis for important decisions about your health or recovery.
Use your own judgement. If something Ray says doesn't feel right, trust yourself — and speak to a real person, your sponsor, or a professional.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings → Delete Account inside the app. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. All your data — including your conversation history, profile, and analytics — will be removed from our systems.
Disclaimers and limitation of liability
Steady is provided "as is" and "as available" without any warranties of any kind, either express or implied. We do not guarantee that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any defects will be corrected.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Steady and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, or harm arising from your use of or inability to use the app.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.
Third-party services
Steady integrates with third-party services including Google Firebase, Anthropic Claude, and OpenAI. Your use of these services via Steady is also subject to their respective terms and policies. We are not responsible for the practices of these third parties beyond our own use of their services.
The meeting finder and helpline numbers in the SOS screen link to external resources. We are not responsible for the content or availability of those external services.
Intellectual property
All content in Steady — including the app design, Ray's character and visual appearance, the Steady name and branding — is owned by or licensed to Steady. You may not copy, reproduce, or distribute any part of Steady without our written permission.
Your conversation content remains yours. You grant us a limited licence to process it solely to provide the service (i.e. to generate Ray's responses and store your history).
Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms of Service from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If we make significant changes, we'll notify you inside the app or by email. Your continued use of Steady after changes take effect means you accept the new terms.
If you don't agree with updated terms, you can delete your account at any time.
Governing law
These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. If you are based in the European Union, you may also have rights under EU consumer protection law that these terms cannot override.
