Right now is the hard part. Take a breath — this moment is survivable, and it's almost over.
Right now
First — you reached for this instead of a drink. That already counts. The urge feels like it will last forever, but it won't: cravings crest and break, usually inside 20 to 30 minutes, and they fade faster when you don't feed them. You don't have to beat it. You just have to outlast it. Right now, in this order:
Tell yourself "not right now, I'll decide in 30 minutes." You're not saying never — you're putting space between the urge and the action. That space is where it loses.
Step outside, get cold water, walk, do twenty of anything. Changing your physical state pulls the floor out from under the craving.
Call your sponsor, a sober friend, the AA helpline — or talk it through with someone right now. The urge thrives in silence; saying it out loud shrinks it fast.
If you're in danger or thinking about harming yourself, please don't wait — contact your local emergency services or a crisis line right away.
